Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla vulgaris) Lady’s Mantle is a stout, herbaceous perennial that grows widely throughout Europe, the UK, Northern Asia, Greenland and the Northeastern US. The basal leaves stay clustered and relatively low to the ground, 4 to 18 inches, making it a popular choice for cottage garden borders. Its broad, kidney shaped leaves are lobed, serrated and hairy, and most notably hydrophobic - resistant to the absorption of water. This makes them a perfect saucer-like receptacle for water and dew, attracting animals, birds and insects stopping for a drink or bath. Lady’s Mantle is called Alchemilla because alchemists collected the water from these leaf basins for their preparations, believing it to have omnipotent magical healing and transformational power. Lady’s Mantle still has a reputation for being somewhat magical, but as a women’s herb - supporting healthy reproductive function* from menstrual issues to menopause. Though the name actually refers to the resemblance of the leaves to a lady’s cloak, it is also poetically significant. The herb makes a lovely, protective companion to support someone “taking up her mantle” as a woman, so to speak. Lady’s Mantle can be infused and steeped for a mildly bitter tea, tinctured or used topically.
