Introducing Spa Ceylon: Luxury Ayurveda

Introducing Spa Ceylon: Luxury Ayurveda

October 27, 2017

Here at Smallflower and Merz Apothecary, we’re so excited to introduce a brand to our lineup that’s not only new to us, but new to the whole country. That’s right—even though Spa Ceylon is one of the leading names in Asian luxury and pampering products, we’re currently the only place you can find it in the U.S.! Since its founding by brothers Shiwantha and Shalin in 2009, Spa Ceylon has opened over 30 boutiques and spas in Southern and Eastern Asia and Europe and developed over 100 products in the spa, homeware, beauty, and lifestyle categories. The brand is deeply influenced by the Sri Lankan community and its history. Read on to find out more about this fascinating company and their excellent product selection.

An Emphasis on Tradition

Though Spa Ceylon may have only existed as we know it since 2009, it draws inspiration from a family business that spanned five decades. The family business specialized in health and beauty care, drawn from wisdom obtained through the ancient practices of Ayurveda, the 5,000-year-old ‘science of life.’ Sri Lankan Ayurveda is a mixture of traditional Sri Lankan medicine, Indian Ayurveda, and Unani medicine from Greece. The royals of Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) were prominent Ayurvedic physicians as well as sovereigns. King Buddhadasa is renowned for writing the Saratha Sangrahaya, an Ayurvedic medical manuscript, in the fourth century. Ayurvedic physicians use this work as a reference to this day. The royals didn’t just use Ayurveda for health and wellness though – over the centuries they developed therapies that ensured long-lasting beauty. These are the traditions that inspired Spa Ceylon to create their line of healing and beautifying luxury goods. You may notice that the packaging for Spa Ceylon goods are vibrant, colorful, and eye-catching. Spa Ceylon incorporates Ceylonese Royal insignia, traditional motifs, Sinhala script, and luscious, bright hues as another nod to the tradition of their native country.

Giving Back to the Community

Caring for people and the environment has always been important for Spa Ceylon, going back to their days as a family business. Today, the brand is determined to give back to its island home. They actively support community fair trade, sustainable harvesting of ingredients, wildlife conversation, human rights protections, and more. For example, Spa Ceylon began the Save the Majestic Ceylon Elephant campaign to raise awareness and fund conservation efforts for Sri Lankan elephants. Because of agriculture and real estate projects, the elephants are being pushed out of their natural habitats. Spa Ceylon created a special range of 50 products for the Save the Majestic Ceylon Elephant campaign, and donated 10% of proceeds to the cause.

Commitment to Pure, Ethical Ingredients

For Spa Ceylon, part of caring for people and the environment is making sure that all the ingredients they use are natural, healthy, and ethical. This means using ingredients like powerful Ayurveda herbs, certified organic essential oils, rich ocean salts, and the finest spices. Most Spa Ceylon products are free of heavy chemicals like alcohol, parabens, paraffin, and silicones. Spa Ceylon has never and never will test its products on animals. Instead, they use willing human volunteers and other laboratory testing techniques to ensure the safety of their products. Additionally, all Spa Ceylon products are totally and completely free of animal products in processing or in the final forms. According to Spa Ceylon, animals belong in the wild—not in laboratories.
