Our History
Established in 1875 by Peter Merz, a Swiss-German pharmacist in Chicago, Merz Apothecary was a thriving community hub for neighbors seeking natural wellness solutions.
Three generations of the Merz family ran the apothecary, importing trusted European remedies and personal care items and providing consultations to customers.
In 1972, Abdul Qaiyum, an Indian pharmacist, visted the store after hearing that it would close when Ralph Merz was set to retire without a successor. He purchased the apothecary, which is still run by the Qaiyum family in Chicago's Lincoln Square neighborhood.
