Premium Loose Herbs
Cowslip - (Primula officinalis) is a semi-evergreen perennial native to temperate regions of Europe and Western Asia in grassy meadows and open woodland areas. Its Latin name, Primula, means “little earliest one” - a possible reference to the fact that Cowslip blooms only from April through May - making it a beloved symbol of early Spring. Its bright yellow, bell-shaped flowers have five petals with small indents on the top edge of each petal. The flowers are enclosed by a long, green, tube-shaped calyx and are found in clusters on each plant, all facing to one side, like a set of keys on a ring. 12th century healer Saint Hildegard of Bingen referred to Cowslip as “Heaven’s Key”. She believed that this plant with the bright yellow blossoms received its power from the sun, and could suppress melancholy in man, she wrote, “When the cowslip primrose is heated and placed on the chest, the forces of the sun radiate back and cheer the heart. ”Dried Cowslip flowers have a very mild, slightly citrusy flavor and make a lovely bedtime tea, gentle enough for all ages.
