A Versatile Herb with a Storied Past
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is a perennial herb native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. After being introduced to the Americas by the European settlers, it now knows no boundaries in the US - growing along roadsides, in parking lots and even through the pavement cracks! It features deeply lobed, dark green leaves with a silvery underside, and its small, cluster-like flowers are typically yellow or reddish-brown.
The many common names for Mugwort, including: felon herb, St. John’s plant, sailor’s tabacco, and naughty man, give a little glimpse into its storied past! Mugwort has been revered and feared, worn for protection and both to summon and ward off witches and fairies. Its latin name Artemisia is for Artemis - the goddess of woodlands and animals, fertility and childbirth, suggesting its strong association with women. Its soft, silvery leaves are reminiscent of the moon, also a connection to women as well as to the intuitive and mystical arts.
In modern herbalism, Mugwort continues to be considered a women’s herb, to help support menstruation and reproductive health - though Mugwort is not safe to use during pregnancy. Mugwort is a mild bitter herb that can help support relaxation and is often used to promote healthy sleep, as well as in rituals to inspire a deep meditative state and even lucid dreaming.

Pour one cup of water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb. Steep for 4-5 minutes. Strain and drink.
