Shepherd’s Purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris) is an annual herb that originated in Europe, Asia and Africa, but is now common and widely distributed throughout the world. It grows up to about 24 inches tall, with white, pink or light purple flowers and characteristic heart-shaped seed pods along the stem. It can commonly be found along roadsides and disturbed soil in both rural and urban areas.
Shepherd’s Purse has long been an herb associated with the blood. Its common uses include helping to regulate a heavy menstrual cycle and topical applications for minor wounds. It is also often used as an astringent to support healthy skin and minor digestive or GI discomfort. Shepherd’s Purse has a mild, slightly bitter taste. It can be taken as tea or used in topical preparations.
