The Witchiest Aura

“In rifleing the closet of the ladie, they found a pipe of oyntement, wherewith she greased a staffe, upon which she ambled and galloped through thick and thin, when and in what manner she listed” – Proceedings Against Dame Alice Kyteler, Prosecuted for Sorcery, 1324

Hexensalbe, also known as witches’ flying ointment, was a hallucinogenic salve used in witchcraft in the middle ages. It was a mixture of extremely poisonous ingredients. The drug produced an ecstatic trance with powerful sensations of flying, images of otherworldly creatures and a primal sexual hunger. These hallucinations are at the core of the mythology of witches, where they fly to the sabbath at Blåkulla or Brocken to do it with the devil and other witches in unholy rites.

So, the image of witches flying can be traced back to the use of hexensalbe, but why on a broomstick? The ointment was so poisonous that eating it would be directly fatal, instead it was applied to other soft membranes of the body, armpits and more commonly the genitals. Because of the erotic effects of the high, the salve would often be rubbed directly onto a phallic object like the end of a staff or a broomstick. And so, the witch did not ride the broomstick like we picture her today. She actually -really- rode it.

Given which aspects of the story of hexensalbe has survived into the modern image of witches, and what has been suppressed, it would seem that the one thing more terrifying than witches or devils, is female sexuality.

Witchy and Sexy

"Opens heavy on liquorice, then mellows out a bit and lets the herby notes breath. As the patchouli comes out its a pretty balanced fragrance, assuming the slight sharpness of black liquorice is one you enjoy. I love the story it ties into, and witchy is definitely an apt descriptor. It doesnt project too far, falling a bit towards the intimate side, but that feels suitable for this combination of notes. I quite like it! I could see myself wearing it more regularly, if not for the fact that the largest and only non-sample size is 30mL. If you like feeling witchy, give it a shot!"

Intoxicating

"I did a blind buy for this perfume because the story and the bottle itself was worth it for me. The funny part is I was more positive I would not enjoy is as much as I do because of the licorice note but wow I was blown away. It smells like the inside of a cabin in the woods as a witch is brewing her potions. A little damp woody smell meets spices and herbs and dries down so beautifully. 10/10 for me"

Stora Skuggan Hexensalbe

"Smells like pure liquorice. These are calming fragrances for challenging times. Balanced, unisex, low sillage, they add something to the conversation without glaciating it."

A witchy concoction

"It kicks off with licorice and wormwood, bringing to my mind the few positive aspects of Malört. As it dries down, the rosemary, tuberose and a whole host of (literally) deadly florals like angelica, belladonna and hemlock take over. Easily one of my favorite fragrances, and I'm always happy to visit Merz/Smallflower! Thank you to Hannah for your help at the fragrance counter!"
