A splendid odd ball, this scent walks the line between the natural and supernatural worlds (of fragrance). Top notes set up this study of dualism, through black currant and black pepper. Spice invades fruit, so that black currant runs into an opaque, mysterious fluid that defies definition, instead obstinately reflecting (or deflecting) curious parties. Galbanum adorns this fruity mirror with sweet, crisp green, that momentarily grounds this fragrance and supplies Hermann with a sense of pleasing realism. Calypsone (island musk) and geosimin reverse towards the surreal, two synthetic realities that supersede nature: calypsone is dewily refreshing (an off-the-water breeze) while geosimin is mineral rich rendering of soil. Hermann feels like standing in an unlit corner of forest, where enigmatic shadows hypnotize. Pepperwood enlivens, while Petalia mimics the green-floral energy of wild blooms, and their raindrop dappled petals. Rose absolute combines a strong verdancy with a satin, shiny pop of pink. Patchouli and ambroxan stabilize this scent: patchouli unfurls plumes of dulcet, herbal spice while amber is a breath of salty sea. A knowing unknown, Hermann is a pellucid expression of existential quandaries, reset in a dim, endless forest. Buoyant yet profound, this smooth androgynous scent makes us relish not being able to see the forest for the trees.
