Imaginary Author Philip Sava (b. 1867 ? d. 1923) Cape Heartache is the lone American contribution to Philip Sava's wildly popular series of exploration novels. It is based loosely on an expedition he made to the Pacific Northwest as a teenager in 1881 and is generally regarded as the most candid of his works. Revolving around a homestead he built in a coastal grove of old growth trees, the novel documents his romance with a young woman who was a descendent of the Nehalem Indian Tribe. It's themes of leaving the familiar and finding comfort and solace in a new place still resonate today. A crowd favorite among Imaginary Author's fans, Cape Heartache resounds with longing, evoking childhood fantasies. Far away from on a remote island, we escape the rigors of school, work, or whatever keeps us feeling tethered. Thick with great trees, this paradise is dense with dark possibility. Douglas fir looms, it's minty, thickly boughed branches stretching long, pointing fingers out at newcomers, a slightly foreboding welcome. Pine resin sparkles on the rough bark of trees, a glittering brown that catches and reflects sunlight through needles and leaves. Western hemlock stretches up towards the sky, pyramids of green that point towards the heaven with an aggressive certainty. Vanilla leaf tinges this stern verdancy with a touch of rich comfort, a bittersweet indulgence that envelops and accommodates the insurgent tangy, sweetness of strawberry. As strawberry rolls, like a wild berry unloosed from its grassy dim hold, across the base of this scent, Cape Heartache takes on a more playful perspective, losing some its insistent nostalgia and adopting the rhythm and rhyme of a lively caper. Old growth reminds us of ancient, damp wood and moss, a delicious discovery of the heart of this island and the unique fragrance of its atmosphere. Mountain fog blows in from the mainland to settle, like a cloud of portent, over our heads, but the secret of Cape Heartache is that, no matter the supposed prophecy, there's no place we'd rather be. Cooly bittersweet and thrilling, Cape Heartache captures mind and hearts, and never lets go. When to wear: For any new adventure including, but not limited to, beach bonfires, first dates, party crashing, or simply barhopping alone on a rainy night. Like a scarf, wear Cape Heartache in the fall and winter and observe how people gravitate to your warmth. Notes: Douglas Fir, Pine Resin, Western Hemlock, Vanilla Leaf, Strawberry, Old Growth, Mountain Fog.
