The Love Herb Tea
Damiana - (Turnera diffusa) also known as Damiana Aphrodisiaca or the Love Herb, is a small shrub native to the Southwest United States, Mexico and Central America. It has small, pale green, serrated leaves and fragrant, five petaled yellow flowers that produce a fruit reminiscent of a fig. Damiana contains volatile oils that produce a potent spicy aroma almost like chamomile, and are likely responsible for its reputation and use as a powerful aphrodisiac.
Earliest use of Damiana dates back to the Guaycuras, a native population on the balmy shores of Baja, Mexico. Damiana was being used in religious ceremonies, but it was eventually banned from use because of its apparent effect on the amorous activities of the worshippers. Despite being banned in Baja, the Aztecs recognized the merits of Damiana, using it intentionally as an aphrodisiac and a tonic for overall health. The use and popularity of Damiana quickly spread through the Americas and Europe where by the end of the 19th century it was being sold as a commercial aphrodisiac.
Damiana is still commonly used to inspire amorous tendencies, but it has many other virtues. It has been used for digestive, respiratory and urinary health, supporting a positive mood and healthy mental state, as well as male and female sexual health. Dried damiana can be used in tinctures, smoking blends or tea. It has a somewhat pungent, bitter and astringent taste due to the presence of such potent volatile oils. Consider pairing it in a tea blend with Spearmint, Lemon balm and rose petal for a delicious, uplifting brew.
