Commonly Found, Extraordinarily Useful

Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is a perennial herb native to North and South America, Europe and most of Africa. Its oblong leaves grow in basal rosette, with characteristic parallel veins running along the 5-6” length. Plantain flower stalks are are about 15”long, covered with tiny, inconspicuous light colored flowers.

Plantain is common around the world, often considered a garden weed, springing up readily along roadsides, in parking lots, or anywhere soil has been disturbed. Though a common plant, Plantain has been found to be extraordinarily useful to humans throughout history as food, first aid, and medicine. Plantain leaf tea can be taken to help support healthy digestion and the respiratory system, including in the case of occasional coughs or cold. Plantain leaf has also often been used topically for minor skin irritations, insect bites or stings or as a mouth rinse.

Directions

Pour one cup of water over 1-2 teaspoons of herb. Steep for 4-5 minutes. Strain and drink.
