Mixed Feelings is inspired by Ingrid's mixed race heritage – she's half Thai and half Norwegian. Mixed Feelings blends the aroma of steamed rice with florals, fruits, wood and incense for a powerful scent that is unabashedly unique.
Mixed Feelings was one of The New Savant's earliest scents and one of the most loved. Here's a note from co-founder and scent designer, Ingrid, on the inspiration behind this brand new version.
"Over the years, I kept having the inkling to redesign Mixed Feelings from scratch. Not to erase the original, but to deepen it. To give it more space. More contrast. And to reflect where I am today, not only as a scent designer, but as a person.
The inspiration has always been the idea of home. I grew up in a house where joy, discomfort, and sorrow lived alongside each other. I was a queer, mixed race girl living amidst the beauty and the tension. Where jasmine bloomed outside my bedroom window, the scent of steamed rice filled the kitchen, and I was navigating what it meant to be more than one thing. I remember the first moment I was othered before I even started kindergarten. I didn’t know exactly what was happening, but I knew it had to do with my identity. My mom and khun yai (grandmother) always made it known that my Thai heritage was a source of pride and power, so it was confusing to me why others didn’t feel the same way.
I was full of Mixed Feelings, and still am, today. The house where I grew up was not often comfortable, so I learned to cherish my freedom. The outside world didn’t know how to accept me, so I learned to accept myself. Mixed Feelings represents so much more than I could ever capture with words, which is why I needed to express it through fragrance. The notes of jasmine and rose make it beautiful, the lychee adds sweet moments of joy, and my favorite part, the steamed rice, is like a soft blanket of comfort. My kun yai only knew a few words of English, but the one phrase she did know was “I love you.” That, is my constant. My home.
